Good to know

Whisper Ridge is the kind of house that makes you slow down about ten minutes after you drop your bags. It sits on a level bench of hardwood forest outside Deep Gap, far enough off the road that the loudest thing most mornings is the wind moving through the trees, with a layered blue ridgeline out past the treetops. Inside, it reads like a well-built barn in the best way. Wide hickory floorboards swing from bone-blonde to chocolate across a single run. A tongue-and-groove plank ceiling crosses the whole main floor under one dark rough-sawn beam. Corner windows framed in honey knotty pine put the mountains directly in view from the sofa, and a built-in fireplace with a reclaimed barn-beam mantel handles the cold evenings. MAIN LEVEL The living room, dining area, and kitchen share one open space. The kitchen has a five-burner gas range, over-range microwave, dishwasher, and a full-size side-by-side refrigerator with ice and water in the door, plus a coffee station with a Nespresso, a drip coffee maker, and an electric kettle. Cherry cabinets, a pearlescent hammered-metal backsplash, and room to work. The dining table seats six under an antler chandelier. Also on this level: the third bedroom with a queen bed and a full bath beside it, plus its own exterior door out to the deck. This is the room to take if stairs are a problem or if someone is getting up early. The laundry closet with a full-size washer and dryer is on this floor too. UPSTAIRS The king bedroom is the largest room in the house, with a low platform bed, a ceiling fan, windows on two sides, and a desk in the corner. The second bedroom up here has a queen, a ceiling fan, a desk with a task chair, and its own private bath with a walk-in shower. A third full bath with a tub-shower combination serves the hallway. OUTSIDE Four separate outdoor spots, which is more than most houses this size. The covered front porch has a cushioned wicker loveseat, a bistro table, and a jute rug. A large open deck sits just off it. Across the downhill side there is a full-width covered porch with a rust-red metal porch swing on chains and a table and bench built from unmilled log timbers. Below that is a lower deck. The fire pit is where most evenings end up. FAMILY-READY We mean it. Already on site: a travel crib, high chair, baby bath, stair gate, toddler floor mattress, children's dishes, and toys. The parking pad is large, level gravel with room for three or four vehicles, set well back from the road. Bring less. GETTING COMFORTABLE Central air conditioning and heat. Wireless internet throughout. A full-size washer and dryer inside the home. Two desks if work follows you up here. Towels, bed linens, and starter toiletries are provided, and the kitchen is stocked with cooking basics. A NOTE ON THE LAYOUT The home has two finished levels connected by one open staircase, and there is no elevator. If anyone in your group would rather avoid stairs entirely, the main-level bedroom and its bath sit on the entry floor along with the kitchen, living room, and laundry.

Neighborhood

Deep Gap is a quiet mountain community along the eastern edge of North Carolina's High Country, sitting between Boone and Wilkesboro on the US-421 corridor. It is mostly hardwood forest, working farms, and long ridgelines, and it stays peaceful in a way the resort towns do not. That is the appeal: you are close to everything the High Country is known for without paying for the crowds. The property itself is surrounded by mature hardwoods that turn hard in October, and deer, wild turkey, and the occasional black bear move through regularly. The Blue Ridge Parkway is about ten minutes away, which puts some of the most scenic driving in the country at the end of your road.

Guest Access

You have the whole house, both porches, the open deck, the lower deck, the fire pit, and the parking pad. All interior spaces are available to you except any locked owner's closets. Please note that the separate outbuilding on the property is private and is not included in the rental.

WHERE YOU'LL STAY

Downtown Boone and Appalachian State are about 20 minutes west, with groceries, restaurants, and the closest full-service shopping. The Blue Ridge Parkway is roughly 10 minutes out. Blowing Rock and Tweetsie Railroad are about 25 minutes. Appalachian Ski Mountain is under 30 minutes, and Sugar Mountain Resort is about 45 for a bigger ski day. The New River is 15 minutes north if you want to get on the water. From November through March, all-wheel or four-wheel drive is strongly recommended for the gravel approach and the mountain grades.
